As the COVID-19 pandemic hit the Bronx, 6-time Grammy Award-winning jazz pianist Arturo O'Farrill brought to life a 9-piece hip-hop-jazz ensemble converting stories of South Bronx life to music resounding in the streets.
Inspired by album covers from the likes of Fania All Stars and the photocopied handbills advertising early hip-hop jams, stylised portraits of the musicians in bold colours are contained inside screen shaped boxes to reference that the first rehearsals were conducted via zoom calls. The names of the artists are rendered in a New York handstyle combined with a decorative display typeface that is reminiscent of signage that can be found in the Latin quarters of the Bronx.
